Welcome to the September edition of Influence, the Chamber’s policy newsletter. As your Chamber, we are proud to be your Podium of Record where we investigate issues, provide the facts and advocate for what’s best for the Calgary business community.
Early next week, the Edmonton and Calgary Chambers will release our joint federal election platform. In this election, Canadians face an important choice. In a rapidly changing global economy, Canada needs strong leadership to navigate the way forward in a way that will boost our competitiveness, strengthen our trade relationships, harness the power of technology and equip our workforce with the skills to thrive. Access to markets, internationally and within our borders, is a necessity for growth for businesses across the country no matter their size. Interprovincial non-tariff trade barriers limit the growth for businesses in our country geographically, often forcing small to medium sized business owners to operate in smaller and more saturated markets. This month, we investigate the effects of these barriers and how they impact business.
As a valued member of Calgary’s business community, your input is requested so we can better understand how the changes made to the minimum wage regulations earlier this summer has affected our business community. Please take the short survey below to provide your input on how the changes affected your business.
We encourage the Government of Alberta to commit to actions that increase competitiveness and show that Alberta is ready to grow. As the voice and Podium of Record for Calgary’s business community, we will continue to work with the government in creating a competitive future that allows business of all sizes to grow.
We continue our ongoing support for the TransMountain pipeline and understand the value the pipeline will bring in terms of the jobs and the economy. We respect the rule of law and look forward to seeing the appeal completed.
The Chamber will be hosting Trevor Tombe, PhD for a Leaders Lunch on September 11. Dr. Tombe will discuss some of the pro and cons of Alberta's recent moves to liberalize trade and what Canada's federal government can and should do.
